Terzo Mondo: un PC per tutti per evolvere

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) è una nuova associazione, non-profit, dedicata alla ricerca per lo sviluppo di un portatile dal costo non superiore a 100$ – una tecnologia che potrebbe rivoluzionare il modo in cui si insegna ai bambini di tutto il mondo. L'iniziativa è stata presentata per la prima volta da Nicholas Negroponte, presidente dell'OLPC, nel gennaio 2005, presso il World Economic Forum a Davos, in Svizzera. Il nostro obiettivo: dare ai bambini di tutto il mondo nuove opportunità di esplorare, sperimentare ed esprimersi. Vi preghiamo di notare che il portatile da 100$ – non ancora in produzione – non sarà messo in vendita. Un computer per ogni bambino del terzo mondo:

Perché i bambini delle nazioni in via di sviluppo hanno bisogno di computer portatili?
I portatili sono una finestra e uno strumento: una finestra sul mondo e uno strumento con cui pensare. Sono un modo meraviglioso per tutti i bambini di imparare ad imparare attraverso l'interazione indipendente e l'esplorazione.

Perché non computer desktop, o – ancora meglio – computer desktop riciclati? I computer desktop sono più economici, ma la mobilità è importante, specialmente per permettere ai bambini di portare a casa il computer dopo la scuola. I bambini dei paesi in via di sviluppo hanno bisogno dei miglioramenti tecnologici più recenti, ed in modo particolare di hardware resistente e di software innovativo. Sperimentazioni recenti nel Maine hanno dimostrato l'immenso valore dell'uso di un portatile lungo tutto l'arco degli studi, anche per il gioco. L'uso del portatile a casa coinvolge la famiglia. In un villaggio cambogiano dove abbiamo lavorato non c'era elettricità, quindi il portatile, tra le altre cose, era la fonte di luce più intensa della casa. Infine, riguardo al riciclo dei computer: stimando che ci siano 100 milioni di desktop usati disponibili, e che ognuno richieda solo quattro ore di intervento umano per essere rimesso a nuovo, inclusa l'installazione del software, l'impresa richiederebbe 45mila anni di lavoro. Quindi, anche se certamente incoraggiamo il riciclo dei computer usati, non è la soluzione che fa al caso di OLPC. Come è possibile raggiungere costi tanto bassi? *Primo, abbassando drasticamente il costo del display. Le macchine di prima generazione godranno di un display di nostra concezione, a doppia modalità, che è il frutto di miglioramenti sugli schermi LCD trovati comunemente nei lettori dvd portatili a basso costo. Questi display possono essere usati anche in piena luce, nella modalità in bianco e nero ad alta risoluzione – tutto questo al costo approssimativo di 35$. *Secondo, mettendo a dieta il sistema software. I sistemi dei portatili odierni sono diventati obesi. Ormai due terzi del loro software hanno la funzione di gestire l'altro terzo, che oltretutto, in genere, esegue la stessa funzione in nove modi diversi. *Terzo, proporremo i portatili, in quantità molto elevate (milioni), direttamente ai ministeri dell'educazione, che potranno distribuirli come libri di testo. Perché è importante che ogni bambino abbia il proprio computer? Cosa non va nei centri di accesso comuni? L'idea di una matita in comune non verrebbe in mente – ogni bambino ha la propria. Sono strumenti con cui pensare, abbastanza economici da essere usati sia per lavoro che per giocare, disegnare, scrivere, e fare matematica. Un computer può seguire gli stessi principi. Fra l'altro, ci sono molte ragioni per cui è importante per un bambino essere il proprietario di qualcosa – come un pallone, una bambola, un libro – e non ultimo il fatto che le cose che sono proprie vengono curate e amate, e mantenute funzionanti. E la connettività? Non sono troppo costose le telecomunicazioni nei paesi in via di sviluppo? Quando queste macchine faranno capolino dalla scatola, creeranno una rete mesh propria, peer-to-peer. Questo è stato inizialmente sviluppato dal MIT e dal Media Lab. Stiamo anche testando modi di connessione alla dorsale di Internet ad un costo molto basso. Cosa può fare un portatile da 1000$ che uno da 100$ non può fare? Non molto. Il progetto prevede che il portatile da 100$ sia in grado di svolgere quasi tutte le funzioni comunemente associate ad un computer. Quello che non farà è archiviare grandi quantità di dati. Come saranno proposti? I portatili saranno venduti ai governi e assegnati ai bambini dalle scuole sulla base del principio un portatile per ogni bambino. Hanno già avuto luogo colloqui preliminari con Cina, India, Brasile, Argentina, Egitto, Nigeria e Tailandia. In più, un modesto numero di macchine sarà utilizzato per far nascere comunità di sviluppatori in alcuni altri paesi. Esploreremo parallelamente anche una versione commerciale della macchina. Quale è la data prevista per l'arrivo sul mercato di questi portatili? Quali pensate siano gli ostacoli più grandi? La nostra tabella di marcia prevede che le prime unità siano spedite entro la fine del 2006 o i primi mesi del 2007. La produzione comincerà quando un numero congruo di macchine, da 5 a 10 milioni, saranno stati ordinati e pagati in anticipo. La difficoltà più grande sarà produrne 100 milioni. Non è solo un questione di forniture, ma anche di design. Le dimensioni sono sconcertanti, ma ciò che alcune compagnie ci hanno proposto mi ha meravigliato. E' come se almeno metà delle difficoltà si risolvessero per pura determinazione. Chi sarà il produttore originale (original design manufacturer - ODM) del portatile da 100$? Quanta Computer Inc. di Taiwan è stata scelta come produttore originale del portatile da 100$. La decisione è stata presa dopo aver vagliato offerte da molti possibili produttori. Quanta Computer Inc. è stata fondata nel 1988 a Taiwan. Quanta è il più grande produttore di computer portatili, con oltre 10 miliardi di dollari di vendite; la compagnia produce anche telefoni cellulari, televisori LCD, server e prodotti per l'archiviazione dati. In più, Quanta ha recentemente aperto a Taiwan un nuovo centro per la ricerca e lo sviluppo da 200 millioni di dollari, il Quanta R&D Complex (QRDC). L'edificio, inaugurato nel terzo quadrimestre (Q3) del 2005, copre più di 180mila metri quadrati, è può ospitare fino a 7000 ingegneri. Come sarà strutturata l'iniziativa? Il portatile da 100$ viene sviluppato da One Laptop per Child (OLPC), un'organizzazione non-profit, situata nel Delaware, creata da membri di facoltà del MIT Media Lab per progettare, fabbricare e distribuire portatili che siano sufficientemente economici da poter fornire a ogni bambino nel mondo l'accesso alla conoscenza e a moderne forme di istruzione. OLPC è basato sulle teorie costruzioniste di apprendimento di Seymur Papert e più tardi di Alan Kay, e anche sui principi espressi nel libro di Nicholas Negroponte, Essere Digitali (Being Digital). Le società che hanno partecipato alla fondazione sono Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Brightstar, Google, News Corporation, Nortel, e Red Hat. Nicholas Negroponte è il presidente di One Laptop per Child e Mary Lou Jepsen è il chief technology officer (CTO). Altri dirigenti coinvolti nello sviluppo del portatile da 100$ sono: Walter Bender, Michail Bletsas, V. Michael Bove, Jr., David Cavallo, Benjamin Mako Hill, Joseph Jacobson, Alan Kay, Tod Machover, Seymour Papert, Mitchel Resnick, e Ted Selker. Design Continuum sta collaborando allo sviluppo del design. Cosa è veramente il laptop da 100$? La macchina da 100$ proposta sarà basata su Linux, con un display a doppia modalità – una a colori, trasmissiva, come gli schermi dei lettori DVD portatili, e una seconda in bianco e nero, riflettiva, leggibile anche in piena luce, con risoluzione tre volte più grande. Il portatile avrà un processore a 500Mhz e 128MB di DRAM, con 500MB di memoria flash; non avrà un disco rigido, ma avrà quattro porte USB. I portatili avranno una connessione senza fili a banda larga che, fra le altre cose, permetterà loro di formare una rete mesh; ogni portatile sarà in grado di comunicare con i suoi vicini più prossimi, creando una rete locale ad hoc. I portatili utilizzeranno metodi innovativi di produzione di energia (anche a manovella) e saranno in grado di svolgere la maggior parte delle funzioni comunemente associate ad un computer, tranne archiviare grandi quantità di dati.
